HISTORY

The roots of Lithuanian Liberal Youth lie in the academia of Vilnius University. Students of the biggest Alma Matter of Lithuania had first created a roundtable discussion club which later evolved into a first movement of organized liberal youth of Vilnius. Activities of Vilnius University students had soon spread all over Lithuania and on the 1st of December, 1991, a national organization of Lithuanan Liberal Youth (LLY) was finally established.

Ever since the restoration of Lithuanian Independence in the beginning of nineties of the last century, LLY had become an active advocate of free-market economy, human rights as well as liberal and democratic values. Throughout the history of LLY, it had always been identified as an organization, known for its radical liberal values and high activity, as well as active participation.(Politology, 1(25), 2002).

Today LLY remains an independent, non-governmental, voluntary youth organisation, gathering over 1400 young people all over Lithuania. LLY has departments in Vilnius, Kaunas, Jurbarkas, Klaipėda, Palanga, Telšiai, Tauragė, Plungė, Alytus, Varėna, Utena, Ukmergė, Šiauliai and Radviliškis.

The objectives of LLY are political education, promotion of liberal values among young people, training its members for political activity and encouragement of the tocreation of open and democratic civil society in Lithuania. Training our members for political activity is one of the main goals of LLY. We are proud to say that some of our members and founders are now well-known personalities in national politics and at the international level. For example, in 2010, 3 out of 5 liberal ministers in the Government come exactly from LLY: Minister of Education Gintaras Steponavičius, Minister of Justice Remigijus Šimašius and Minister of Transport Eligijus Masiulis.

LLY actively participates in the international activities and maintains wellestablished international contacts with liberal youth organisations around the world. Currently we are full member of European Liberal Youth – LYMEC and International Federation of Liberal Youth – IFLRY.
